May 6-7  5th Annual O.N.E Health and Wellness Pow Wow, Johnson County Community College Gym, Overland Park, KS 66210.  The American Indian Health Research and Education Alliance (AIHREA) will be hosting the 5th Annual O.N.E. (Our Nations Energies) Health and Wellness Pow Wow on Friday, May 5th and Saturday, May 6th, 2011. The pow wow will be held at the Johnson County Community College Gym in Overland Park, KS. The Health and Wellness Fair will run from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and the pow wow will run from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm on Friday. On Saturday the Health and Wellness Fair will run from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and the pow wow will run from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. There is no admission cost and the event is open to everyone.  The AIHREA O.N.E. Pow Wow is an educational and cultural event for the Kansas City metro area and northeast Kansas. The event has grown in recent years. An estimated 1,500 people were in attendance at last year’s pow wow and over 800 free health screenings were conducted. This year the free health screenings will include body mass index, blood cholesterol, blood glucose, blood pressure, lung function tests, heart disease and cancer risk assessments, hearing tests, vision tests and referrals to free medical care. Incentives will be given to people who participate in the health fair screenings.  The pow wow will feature American Indian singing, dancing, arts and crafts, and food. Friday night will begin at 6:00 p.m. with a grand entry. A hand drum contest and the Sr. and Jr. Miss AIHREA contest will also be held on Friday night. On Saturday, Gourd Dancing will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Grand entry will be at 12:00 p.m. with a dinner break from 5:00 pm to 6:00 p.m. There will also be a healthy pow wow food cooking contest at 5:00 p.m.  AIHREA is committed to addressing health disparities currently facing American Indian communities. May 7-8  Noxen Volunteer Fire Co 6th Annual Mothers Day Pow Wow, Stull Road, Noxen PA  18636.  Free Admission!  Gates open at 10 am with Grand Entry at noon both days.  Head Male = Joseph "Spirit Wolf" and Head Lady = DiAnne "Running Wolf". Gates open at 10 am on Saturday and close at 10 pm with grand entry at noon with night dancing and trade blanket. Sunday gates open from 10 am until 6 pm on Sunday with grand entry at noon. All times are on “Indian time”. Host Drum: Daughters of the Southern Wind with Wyona Singers and Thunder on the Mountain as guests. Head male dancer Joe “Spirit Wolf” and DiAnne “Running Wolf” as head female. There will be Native American dancing in full regalia, various local drums, story telling, trade blanket, and Native American food and craft vendors. No Admission fee, open to the public. All dancers/vendors are welcome. This is a non competition gathering. Camping is free but there is a $5.00 per day fee for electric. Pot Luck Dinner on Saturday, please bring a covered dish.
